NDTV IMAGINE’S SANTO – A CHARACTER OF IMMENSE INNER STRENGTH

It has been a very satisfying experience to watch the emotional and spiritual growth of NDTV Imagine’s Bandini-Santo. From a wide-eyed gawky teenager (eighteen is teen, right?) to a mature woman, her transition has been very smooth, gradual and interesting to watch. Orphaned at a young age and raised by her maternal grand- father, Santo would have never guessed that she would one day end up getting married to the most powerful man of her village – Dharamraj Mahiyavanshi. But this marriage was one of convenience and ended her idyllic life with her siblings and beloved grandfather. Post marriage, she is wife to a man who is almost twice her age and is a step mom to children who are older than her.
Thus begins her journey to learn all about her capabilities and strength. Thrust into a family where no one wants her, she has to fight for acceptance. But her struggle is silent, non-aggressive. Despised by the older children who have no place in their lives for her, she begins to win them over by her sincerity and love, one by one. Initially hesitant because of her unaccepted position, she grows from strength to strength, as people begin to accept and love her. Her step children, the parents of her husband’s wife, friends of the family-every body slowly give her the respect and position she is worthy of. Even her husband, who had been so far wedded to the memory of his deceased first wife, accepts her and ends up falling in love with her.
Every battle that she had to face made her a stronger and wiser person. Emboldened by the faith shown in her by her loved ones, she is able to surmount many obstacles. Her main adversary in her husband’s household is his over-protective elder sister, Tarulata and her son Maulik. They leave no opportunity to harass her. They use those dear to her as pawns in order to make her life difficult. One such pawn turns out to be Dharamraj’s long lost son Arjan. Maulik is able to turn Arjan against his own family and in a moment of heat, Arjan lashes out at his father and hits him. Before he can kill him, Santo enters the scene and saves her husband’s life. But then someone kills Arjan. Santo knows the killer and in order to protect the murderer’s life (who is her close relation) she willingly takes the blame on her head and goes to prison.
Bandini – weird stuff starting to happen; Arjan killed and DM in a coma like situation

Bandini, which was moving as an interesting story, seems to be getting inspired by all the earlier brand of Hindi Serials where anything could happen and where all sorts of coincidences could happen anytime. And so it is happening in Bandini.
First it turned out that Khemi could not marry Hiten since her sister was married to Hiten’s father, seems fine enough; then Khemi gets married to another man called Arjan with no connection; and then it turns out that Arjan was also DM’s son (wonder how many more sons DM had wandering around the region). And so the same problem occurs; and it was earlier shown that Arjan was a decent sort of person, and then the serial shows him slowly becoming a source of all problems.
So, Dharamraj leaves the decision about Khemi-Arjan to Santu, who finally decides that they need to separate; and while nobody likes the decision, it was becoming clear that DM is appreciating what all she has done for the family. But then Khemi faints and you know that she will be pregnant.
But then Arjan is getting instigated by Moullick, who keeps on urging him against Hiten and against DM, and Arjan finally attacks DM (his own father). In this incident, the details of what actually happened is not clear, but DM became unconscious, Arjan died, and Santu became splattered with blood, claiming that she had killed Arjan because he had attached DM.
And now, the serial is claimed to be going towards a generation change, which will change everything, and the separation between DM and Santu will remain.
Bandini – Santo has to take a hard decision

This is now completely ridiculous, how can a person land up in the same problem; looks like the writer of the serial is manufacturing things from thin air. Consider the earlier case, Santo was married to DM, and as a result, Khemi and Hiten could not get married. In the end, Khemi married Arjan, and saved her sister the trouble.
And then, many episodes later, it came out again that Arjan is also DM’s son (looks like he has got sons all over the place, and since Moulick was not his own, he just got a replacement). But the same situation all over again, how can Khemi be married to Arjan, since by relation, Arjan is now Santo’s son (after all, the son cannot marry his mother’s sister). To get around this, DM asks Santo to sit in decision this time. The added complication is that Hiten does not like Arjan, and said that he would not like to live in the same house as Arjan.
However, when Santo gives her decision, she rules against Khemi and Arjan, something that causes all of them, Hiten, Khemi, and Arjan all to criticize her. Khemi even sarcastically calls her the “malkin” (owner of the house). At this, probably for the first time, Dharamraj calls the family and scolds all of them for forgetting what all Santo has done, that she took the right decision, and how can Hiten even think about criticizing her. Arjan however says that he will leave with Khemi, and suddenly, it turns out that Khemi is pregnant, and is advised bed rest. What will happen to Santo’s order ?
Bandini – Dharamraj distances himself from relatives

Bandini has entered a somewhat strange territory. For some time Santo had been keeping the secret of Tarulata, the fact that she earlier married to Kanji Vagela, and that she also had a son Moulick, who was brought up as Dharamraj’s son. This was something that his wife, Subhadra was also knowing about, but Dharamraj did not know about this, and was never told.
Just before Anamika came into the picture, claimed to be Subhadra, and was then exposed as being a fraud, Dharamraj had married Santo formally and given her all the rights. However, he comes to see Subhadra’s diary, and realizes that a secret is being held from him. He tells Santo that a husband and wife have no secrets, but she is not able to tell him the secret of Taulata’s marriage.
And then Dharamraj gets to know. He is shocked beyond measure; telling Tarulata and Santo that he is breaking his relationship with them, scolds and slaps Moulick for not telling him, and then he calls a Pandit to do a prayer since he no longer has Moulick for a son. And then he hands out the punishment to Santu – Santu will stay in the house, but Dharamraj will not acknowledge her or have anything to do with her. Motiben / Tarulata has gone to Kanji’s house and moved out of the house, and DM now misses her.
