On November 08, 2008 in Colors, Competition, Contest, Drama, Gossip, Hindi Serial, Popular, Reality Show, TV, Video
Big Boss (part 1 an year back on Sony) is now in Season 2. It was fairly successful in Season 1, and in Season 2, it moved to the Viacom promoted channel Colors. Colors has been promoting it with a huge amount of effort, running many ads before the show started. Now that the show has started, the 10 – 11 AM time slot, the 12 AM – 1 AM time slot, many discussions of the events on new channels, on the radio, and other media has also happened (and Colors will be happy for all this free publicity). Season 1 ended on 16 January 2007, and Season 2 started more than an year later, at 17 August 2008 (the final is scheduled for 22 November 2008). The channel managed a big catch, with the winner of the Britain based Big Brother Shilpa Shetty appearing as the host once a week, where the person to be kicked out is decided.
No Entry (2005): A less cheap comedy
On May 12, 2008 in Bollywood, Comedy, Gossip, Movie, Music, Romance, Song, Video
The movie stars these main stars, Anil Kapoor & Lara Dutta, Salman Khan and Esha Deol, Fardeen Khan and Celina Jaitley, Bipasha Basu. No Entry was one of a series of movies that dealt in a comical way with marriages and adultery. These movies were of a typical adult nature, and included movies such as Masti, No Entry, etc; movies that were criticized by a number of people for some amount of crudeness as well as depicting adult relationships in a casual manner. However, they were successful to some degree, with No Entry being a good hit. No Entry was a bit leff crude than the others, and the skin show was a bit toned down – the girls wore short clothes, but these were depicted as their normal clothes, there was a lower amount of man-girl close contact shown in the movie. The movie was directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Boney Kapoor. Music is by Anu Malik.
Sapna Babul Ka Vidai

Sometimes you get serials that promise to be real tear-jerker. Alok Nath runs a family comprising of his wife played by Vibha Chibber (the assistant coach in movie Chak de India), his daughter Ragini (played by Parul Chauhan), and her cousin Sadhana (Sara Khan). The serial bears an uncanny resemblance to the start of the movie Vivah, although things could change later.
The serial comes on Star Plus weekdays (Monday – Thursday) at 9 PM for 30 minutes. The show seems a bit regressive, given that it currently seems to focus on parents desiring only one thing out of their daughters, that is. to get them married. In addition, there is a lot of focus on the emphasis of complexion on the ability to get married, and how groom’s side can actually refuse to get their boy married just on the basis of complexion.
Ragini is in the queue to get married, but her cousin Sadhana is fair compared to the darker complexion of Ragini. To this end, Ragini’s mother wants to prevent Sadhana from ever being seen when boys are seeing Ragini, or anywhere during the pre-marriage and marriage occasions (imagine depriving a cousin of the chance of taking part in the marriage festivities). And typically for a serial of this type, Sadhana is forced to emerge when the marriage of Ragini is happening at which stage, the groom’s mother wants to swap the beautiful Sadhana for Ragini as the bride (imagine selecting a girl just based on complexion !). At this point thankfully, Alok Nath stands firm; although why they could not call the police when the groom’s family demanded money was beyond me.
Nostalgia: Nice family comedy: Hum Paanch
On November 24, 2007 in Character, Comedy, Drama, Family, Gossip, Hindi Serial, Middle Class, TV, Zee
It has been said again and again that serials that have run well once before do not so well in their second innings. Many times, a serial has been very well-received earlier, and then years later, the serial makers come out with a desire to run the serial again, hoping that it will reach the same level of popularity. That is an event that does not happen, in almost all cases, the serial being introduced again does not work that well, and gets eventually withdrawn. Example of such serials are Karamchand, Hum Paanch, and a few others. There are many reasons for this, such as the choice set being limited when the serial first started appearing, but now choices are much greater. Further, why a serial becomes a hit is not exactly a well-defined science, and just because it was a hit earlier does not mean that the serial will still be a hit.
