Drona – can skip

On October 09, 2008 in Action, Bollywood, Magic, Movie

I was reading an article in a magazine last week, and it was talking about the forthcoming release of Drona. The article raved about this being a highly acclaimed technical movie, with an incredible amount of hard work and technical effects thrown in, and I was eagerly anticipating the movie. I managed to cajole the spouse and parents to see the movie along with me, and even though reviews were out by that time and did not promise much, I still went along. Bad decision, I should have believed the reviews.
Drona is a movie about a secret as old as existence, from the Hindu mythology where the Gods and Demons (asuras) churned the seas a long long time back, and one of the secrets that emerged was the elixir of ever-lasting life (amrit) which would make the owner live forever. In order to keep it away from the demons (you would not give anything so powerful to the demons), it was decided that there would be a set of warriors who would forever protect the secret of this ‘amrit’, and they and their descendants would be called ‘Dronas’. In addition, there would another set of warriors to protect them. And here is this ‘Cindrella’ in the shape of a man, who has been terrorized since childhood by a horrid foster mother, who would suddenly discover that he is the ‘Drona’, and then go through mysteries aided by a beautiful protector. He would fight the evil monster who killed his father, and save the secret.

Kismet Connection: Too much chance / luck

On September 03, 2008 in Bollywood, Comedy, Magic, Melody, Movie, Music, Romance, Song, Video

I was watching Kismet Connection trying to see what would appeal to me. I did not go there expecting anything great, even though I like both Vidya Balan, and Shahid Kapur; however, in the end, if I summarize my view of the movie as something like this – my expectations were met (I did not expect anything great, and there was nothing great). In my view, the movie depended too heavily on the concept of Kismet / chance, and somehow overlook tuning the story to be more clearer. And the sheer wastage of Juhi Chawla in that stupid short role was criminal. Overall rating of the movie from 1-5 (with 5 being very good / excellent), just about touching 2. Yep, not a very good score, but justified. There was just nothing compelling about the story.

Movie: Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008) – Watchable

On August 09, 2008 in Bollywood, Child, Comedy, Family, Magic, Movie, Romance

Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic was a movie made under the banner of Yash Raj Films (produced by Aditya Chopra and Kunal Kohli) starring Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherji, and a smaller role by Amisha Patel and Rishi Kapoor. The movie is written and directed by Kunal Kohli (no doubt an attempt to try to re-create the success of his earlier movie Hum Tum (2004) starring Saif and Rani). The movie has some nice music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy (with the ‘Nihaal Ho Gaayi’ song being catchy and popular; the ‘Lazy Lamhe’ song did not become so popular even though it had a lot of eye candy). The movie had some great performances by the kids, by Rani Mukherji (given her closeness to the producer, this would have been expected though); the performance by Saif Ali Khan was marred by the fact that the movie script almost made him change his character in the space of 15 minutes.

Smriti Irani comes back on Kyunki ..

On April 13, 2008 in Character, Drama, Family, Hindi Serial, Magic, Star Plus, TV

After being seen on ads and promos for some time, Smriti Irani made her appearance back on Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. It was just a short appearance, but it happened after major scenes of confrontation between Mihir and Mandira on one side, and the rest of the family on the other side. The family is not prepared to accept Mihir with Mandira and are willing to let him go from the house, rather than accept him. But is Tulsi (Gautami) actually Tulsi, or is she somebody collaborating with Mandira ? More will become clear as time moves on.
The other thing that got shown in this serial was something that is not in the best of taste. Kyunki is a prime time serial with a big audience, and to show black magic discussion, and all the stuff related to that is something that the show could have done without. One would hate to think that in some remote area of the country, a woman is persecuted for being a witch because she is accused of doing black magic.
