Jyoti – Time to make up your mind, strong woman or weak one.
On January 29, 2010 in Ads, Drama, Family, Hindi Serial, Jyoti, Marriage, Middle Class, NDTV Imagine, TV
The makers of NDTV Imagine’s Jyoti ought to make up their mind and that too pretty quickly. It seems that the powers that be are undecided about the way they want to position their lead character-Jyoti. It seems they want to project her as a strong independent woman who has a mind of her own and yet for some inexplicable reason they are forever limiting her horizon. Initially when the show was in its nascent stage, Jyoti was projected as the sole bread earner of her family and as such she was fiercely independent, self reliant, practical and dutiful.
Jyoti was conscious of the burden (she never termed it that) of managing a family consisting of an invalid father, an ageing grand mother, an unemployed slightly flighty younger brother and two unmarried sisters. But this did not stop her from dreaming of her own house, her own family, her private love nest (while she was romancing Brij). While in most other serials it is sacrilege to harbour personal dreams and ambitions; Jyoti had no such hang ups or pretensions. She was not selfish just because she had her private dream goals and aspirations. Just as we were getting ready to applaud a very ‘real’ character, the makers changed their positioning of Jyoti.
Pavitra Rishta – the truth finally comes out
On January 13, 2010 in Drama, Family, Hindi Serial, Middle Class, Pavitra Rishta, Romance, TV, Zee
On Pavitra Rishta, the misunderstanding between Archana and Manav kept on increasing. Archana believed (on the basis of a set of circumstances created by Ajit) that Manav was responsible for a lot of the things that had gone wrong in her life; and then Manav’s father finally managed to get evidence from Ajit that he was responsible for everything. However, before they could resolve their matters and get Archana to listen to this evidence, Manjusha filed a false complaint before the police that Manan’s family used to torture Archana, and the police arrested them all and beat them in prison.
Because of this arrest, Sachin’s plan of going to the US got canceled since his visa got rejected. He was very upset because of all this, and due to this, he got into an accident and lost his life. This very badly shook up the entire family, and they all blamed Archana for this, and Archana was not able to even protest much about Manjusha’s false complaint. In the meantime, it was revealed that Saanvi, Sachin’s fiancee was pregnant with Sachin’s child, and was determined to have the baby. Manav did the right thing by offering to marry her so that she could have the baby, given that his divorce to Archana was due.
However, finally the taped evidence about Ajit’s guilt was heard by Archana’s family, and they all realized that Manav was innocent, and Ajit was guilty, and are no longer able to believe Manjusha when she kept on stating that her brother was innocent. In the meantime, the relation between Sathish and Varsha was slowly starting to grow.
Pavitra Rishta – Manav’s family spends time in jail
On December 14, 2009 in Drama, Family, Hindi Serial, Marriage, Middle Class, Pavitra Rishta, TV, Zee
Pavitra Rishta seems to be moving towards a climax. Whenever Manav tries to prove his innocence, things seem to go the other way and his image is further sullied, increasing the distance between him and Archana. Archana also started believing that Manav was responsible for some misdeeds that were blamed on him, and as a result, Manav is further shocked. However, Manav’s father and Archana’s sister believe in this relationship, and want to try anything to ensure that they get a chance to meet – this includes going to the other party’s house to send over invitations for functions, and getting Archana to come over for the opening of Manav’s garage.
This time, Manav manages to get proof of Ajit boasting that he was the one who was behind all these activities, and rides off to show this proof (proof was in a recording). However, Ajit’s sister Manjusha decides to prevent this from happening, and files a complaint in the police station that Manav and his family commit torture on Archana (and the police take Manav in and beat them up – they do this without verifying the complaint and without even hearing the girl in question). As a result, Manav decides to finally break off all ties with Archana, even though Archana did not do any of this.
Gharonda (1977) – A wonderful but sad story
On September 21, 2009 in Bollywood, Classic, Despair, Lyrics, Melody, Middle Class, Movie, Music, Romance, Song
The quest to have a house of one’s own is a very strong impulse, capable of stirring up strong emotions in any person. Gharonda is a movie on that concept, on the quest of a young couple to have a house of their own. I was very impressed with the movie, even though the movie can leave you down a path where you feel that life can go very negative, and where events can happen that leave you feel disillusioned with life.
The movie was released in 1977, and became popular as a movie with emotions, and some great music. The movie was directed and produced by Bhimsain, with some great lyrics by Gulzar and music by Jaidev. The movie starred Amol Palekar, Zarina Wahab, Shreeram Lagoo, and Jalal Agha.
